Is there any money in it?

Take a close look at the compensation plan and make sure you understand and are comfortable with the potential for both immediate earnings as well as long-term, residual income. Be alert to claims that you'll make a certain amount of money and to anything that suggests you'll get rich quick.

Beware of plans that ask new distributors to purchase expensive inventory. Don't pay or sign any contracts in an “opportunity meeting” or any other high-pressure situation. Insist on taking your time to think over a decision to join. While you may not understand all the ins and outs of the compensation plan, make sure you clearly understand what it will take to begin making money; what it takes to advance in the company; and what the long-term potential is.
